Dragon Art Figure

This project tackles 3-D modeling software to create a cartoonish character to be manufactured into an art toy. The digital sculpt takes the design of an established piece and reworks it to best suit a smaller figurine scale The goals in creation are to create a 3-D printable model that is texturally detailed enough to be 3-D printing and reproduced at a toy scale, with a design that is engaging enough that it draws the attention of buyers in a competitive market of artist figures. The target audience of this model are collectors of pieces by smaller artists, but the design will aim to appeal broader to engage with casual collectors who may be more likely to stick with something like pokemon or funko pop. The design of the creature will be based on the larger scale dragon Dennis, digitally recreated to be mass produced.

Dennis is the best choice for a character design as it helps to circle back to the initial project in the portfolio. Functionally it works as a more intentional choice for a character design as opposed to something completely new, as the previously seen design will give context to viewers for the smaller scale of the figure. By connecting the scale model to a life sized sculpture, the project creates a synergy between works that consumers will respond to better. The dragon is given a new pose on a couch to give it a sturdier feel when 3-D printing, and the proportions of the creature are altered slightly to make sure that pieces of the model aren’t fragile enough to break when handling.
