Scraps in a Scrap

The goal of this project is to create a set of found object sculptures made of repurposed plastic parts in order to create two robots in a scrapyard. The two figures appear rusty and are meant to represent a larger scale with real world objects added in to set the scale. The target audience is people who would find an interest in more illustrative sculpture concepts, mainly men and women in their early to mid 20s. This group will be drawn towards its cartoonish representation of a scrapyard and appreciate the forms that the figures take to represent it.

The project will use the visual elements of a junkyard and combine it with the symbolism of broken down and repurposed objects to present themes of deconstruction and rebirth to its audience. The pair of figures together represent robots built of assorted scrap metal and other large scale discarded objects. One takes visual queues from a humanoid shark, pulling itself from a rubble pile, while the other presents as a submarine with long legs and a tow cable attached to the shark. Through its visual ties to an aging material and a medium of found or destroyed objects, the sculptures present themes of deconstruction and rebirth in a way that is lighter in tone and more engaging to viewers.

I see it as a representation of the natural flow of time, and how regardless of the damage life may cause, you have the opportunity to make something new of yourself and innovate, or you can simply rust away and be lost to the world around you. As an individual, I take pride in choosing the former.
